Will it pass inspection?

What inspectors actually check

This isn't legal advice — your city and fire marshal have the final word. But after years of commercial installs, here's what almost always matters:

  • Clearances from combustibles

Every model publishes minimum distances to walls, ceilings, and overhangs. We spec to those numbers — not to vibes.

  • Placement & egress

Heaters can't block exits or sit where guests brush against them. Layout is part of the plan, not an afterthought.

  • Ventilation for gas units

Combustion needs air. Enclosed or low-clearance spaces change which models are appropriate.

  • Fuel storage & lines

Propane storage rules and gas line work have their own requirements — gas work goes through a licensed installer on request.

  • Enclosed-flame options

In strict jurisdictions, enclosed-burner models (like SunStar's, rated to 40-mph wind with no open flame) take the fire question off the table.

Common questions

Do patio heaters need a permit?

It depends on your city, the fuel type, and whether gas lines or electrical work are involved. Permanent natural gas installs often do; portable propane usually doesn't. Check with your local building department — or ask us and we'll tell you what typically applies.

What will the fire marshal look for?

Clearances from combustibles, proper placement away from exits and overhangs, and stable fuel storage. Enclosed-flame models (like SunStar's) remove the open-flame question entirely in strict jurisdictions.

Can heaters go under a tent or canopy?

Only models rated for it, with the manufacturer's required clearances — and many jurisdictions restrict it. Tell us about the setup before assuming.
